Shiretoko is the area located in the eastern part of Hokkaido Prefecture. It is the peninsula which protrudes like a horn on Hokkaido’s terrain. The average temperature in winter drops below freezing and drift ice flows in the sea. Although temperatures may exceed 30℃ in the summer, it is comfortable because of the low humidity.
Shiretoko was registered as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2007 and its abundant nature is one of its major attractions. Especially popular are the Shiretoko Nature Cruise and Shiretoko Sightseeing Cruise which take visitors around Shiretoko Peninsura. There are various cruises such as those that allow visitors to observe wild animals, or onsen hot spring waterfall, Kamuiwakka Hot Falls with a 130 meter drop.
The use of an automobile is useful for transportation within Shiretoko. Try using drive courses such as the Trans Shiretoko Road Route 334. The closest airport is the Memanbetsu Airport. It is possible to rent automobiles at the airport as well.
